INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED DANCE TEACHER HONOURED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF GREENWICH

Doreen Bird was only 17 years old when she set up the Doreen Bird School of Dance, in 1945. This became the Doreen Bird School of Performing Arts in 1951 with a full-time three-year course for six students. Doreen is a fellow and life member of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) and a former Major Examiner, Committee and Council Member. She is also a life member of the Royal Academy of Dance and has been influential in the examination of dance nationally. On behalf of the ISTD, she has examined in Great Britain, Canada and South Africa, and has co-authored a range of syllabi for the ISTD at all grades.

Dr Rob Allen, a Dean of the university, who has worked closely with Doreen in the past says, "the university has recognised her because she has created both a successful college and a recognised graduate career-track for people whose ambition is to perform in the musical theatre."

The College in Sidcup, Kent is now internationally recognised as a centre of excellence and runs a ‘Dance and Theatre Performance’ BA (Hons) degree course externally validated by the University of Greenwich since 1997. Students go on to varied careers in dance and theatre companies. Glittering alumni include Melanie Chisholm of the Spice Girls and Gary Avis, Principal Dancer of the Royal Ballet recently featured in the television documentary ‘Ballet Boyz’.

Doreen retired as Principal of the college in July 1998 and is now a trustee of the Doreen Bird Charitable Foundation.
