MEDWAY ENGINEER RECEIVES MEDAL OF ACHIEVEMENT

A leading Medway engineer has been honoured by the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) – the largest professional engineering organisation in Europe.

Professor Yong Yan, of the University of Greenwich at Medway, was presented with a prestigious IEE Medal of Achievement at the institution’s Mountbatten Lecture, Savoy Place, London, on Wednesday (November 5) by IEE President Sir David Brown.

Professor Yan is Director of the university's Centre for Advanced Instrumentation and Control.

Sir David paid tribute to Professor Yan’s outstanding contribution to the development of instrumentation for the metering of solids flows.

He said: “Solids flow measurement has been recognised as a long standing industrial problem to which there has been no satisfactory solution for more than three decades.

“Professor Yan and his research team have developed innovative solids flow instruments which can measure velocity, concentration and mass flow rate of particles in pneumatic pipelines and stacks.

“Such instruments have been installed in a range of industrial processes and have helped operators to achieve increased process efficiency and reduced pollutant emissions.”

Accepting the award, Professor Yan said he was delighted that the IEE has recognised this important area of engineering and the technological advances his research team at the Medway School of Engineering has achieved over the past ten years.

The annual Mountbatten lecture, entitled From Major to Minor – the Development of a Quantum Industry, was delivered by Professor Michael Pepper of Cambridge University.

Guests included industry leaders, academics, senior engineers and policy makers.
